Why is my poodle digging so much, and how do you get him to stop? There\u2019s a variety of reasons that a dog takes up digging as their favorite pastime, but in most cases there are ways to remedy the behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, you will need to discover why your dog is digging. Learning why your poodle digs will help you identify the proper solution for your poodle&#8217;s digging problem. He also could be chasing vermin that you can\u2019t see. You will need to take a close look at your poodle&#8217;s behavior to learn why he is digging and what the best solution is to fix it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read on to learn how best to stop your Poodle\nfrom digging! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"steps-to-take-to-stop-your-poodle-from-digging\">Steps to Take to Stop Your Poodle From Digging <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are definitely a few things you can do to immediately plant the idea in your dog\u2019s head that digging is bad, and he should be doing other activities besides digging a hole in your yard.<strong> Start with these ideas.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"make-sure-your-poodle-gets-enough-exercise\">Make Sure Your Poodle Gets Enough <strong>Exercise<\/strong> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If the reason your Poodle is digging is that he\u2019s bored, <a href=\"https:\/\/poodlereport.com\/how-to-exercise-a-miniature-poodle-a-detailed-guide\/\">exercise is the answer<\/a>. Some dogs need over an hour of exercise a day to stimulate their brains. &#8220;A tired dog is a happy dog&#8221;. If you&#8217;ve heard this saying before, there\u2019s a reason. Tire your dog out so he doesn\u2019t have the energy to dig any holes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"make-more-toys-and-bones-available-for-your-poodle\"><strong>Make More Toys and Bones Available<\/strong> for Your Poodle<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This also solves the problem of boredom. Give your dog something else to chew on besides dirt and grass. There are a few ways to do this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Fence off the area<\/strong>. Make it physically impossible for your dog to access the area he wants to dig in. If he can\u2019t reach it, he can\u2019t dig it. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Put down some citrus juice, cayenne pepper, or vinegar. <\/strong>It might sound hurtful to your dog, but it\u2019s not. It\u2019s more of an annoyance, kind of like it would be for you if some pepper went up your nose. One or two strong sniffs of vinegar and your Poodle probably won\u2019t dig in the same spot ever again.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Plant some rose bushes<\/strong>. If fencing off the area isn\u2019t an option, perhaps planting a thorny bush is. Like the pepper, it won\u2019t take much to deter your dog. One or two brushes against the thorns, and he will be very cautious about approaching that hole again. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"distract-your-poodle-from-digging\"><strong>Distract Your Poodle<\/strong> From Digging<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>  Be smarter than the dog. I say this from experience. It\u2019s not as easy as it sounds. There have been many times when I\u2019ve felt outsmarted by my dog! But, sometimes, you just need to catch your dog red-handed (or dirty-pawed), and immediately distract him and get him on a new activity. Does your dog like to play <a href=\"https:\/\/poodlereport.com\/do-poodles-play-fetch\/\">fetch<\/a>? Start throwing a tennis ball around and make him forget about digging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"rid-your-yard-of-vermin\"><strong>Rid Your Yard of Vermin<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong> <\/strong>Maybe he\u2019s not digging a hole. Maybe he\u2019s catching a mole. Back to the question of, \u201cwhy is my dog digging?\u201d Make sure you don\u2019t have vermin that your dog is trying to catch. If you do, if you eradicate them and you might eradicate your dog digging problem. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a variety of\npaths you can take to get your Poodle to stop digging. <strong>One of the most important things you can to get your dog to stop\ndigging is to figure out why he is digging in the first place.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"why-is-my-poodle-digging\">Why is my Poodle Digging? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Understanding why your poodle is digging can go a long way\ntowards figuring out how to stop him from digging. If we can understand what is\nmaking him do it, then we can solve the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are a few of the most common reasons your dog is\ndigging and what you can do to remedy the behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"your-poodle-is-bored\">Your Poodle is Bored<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p> This is a very common reason as to why dogs dig. Maybe you have a fenced in backyard, and you let your poodle have free roam of the yard. You might think he likes the freedom and he\u2019ll just run laps to keep himself busy. Don\u2019t be surprised if he starts digging. He has a lot of energy and needs an outlet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where exercise comes into play.<strong> <\/strong>Just because you had a long day at work, came home and are exhausted, doesn\u2019t mean your dog is. Give your dog so much exercise every single day that he is falling asleep easily. Give him too much exercise. Then see if he still digs. Your dog might just need more than 4 laps around the block to pee every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"your-dog-is-digging-to-catch-rodents\"><strong>Your Dog is Digging to Catch Rodents<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>What looks like digging to you might actually be pest control by your dog. <strong>Is it possible you have a rodent problem? <\/strong>Look for mouse droppings in your yard. Look for those little tunnels under the dirt that moles dig. Do you see any signs of vermin? If you do, set some do-it-yourself traps to catch the vermin, or call an exterminator. Get rid of your vermin, and see if the \u201cdigging\u201d stops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"he-s-cooling-off-on-a-hot-day\"><strong>He\u2019s Cooling Off<\/strong> on a Hot Day<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>On a hot summer\u2019s day, your dog could be digging because the dirt and clay underneath are cool. Does he dig a hole and then lay in it looking like he\u2019s all proud of himself? He might have just found a cool spot to rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>It might sound silly\nto ask yourself why your dog is digging, but it\u2019s actually very important! <\/strong>Before\nlaunching right into being upset at your dog, take a look at why your dog might\nbe digging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"do-poodles-dig-more-than-other-dogs\">Do Poodles Dig More Than Other Dogs? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Every time you see a new hole in your yard, you\u2019re probably\nasking yourself, \u201cdo other dogs dig this much, or am I just the lucky that got\na dog that wants to dig to China?\u201d <strong>All\ndogs can be diggers. <\/strong>I\u2019ve had three or four different dog breeds. Some were\ndiggers, and some were not, and there didn\u2019t seem to be much of a rhyme or\nreason behind why some never dug, and some I had to keep a watchful eye on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Poodles are generally thought to be a little less energetic\nthan some other breeds, so you probably won\u2019t find out that your Poodle is\ndigging specifically because he needs the exercise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The other thing you have going for you, Poodles are highly\ntrainable and thought to be more intelligent than a lot of other breeds. This\nmeans, even if your Poodle is digging, you should be able to train him fairly\neasily to stop digging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>One fact that could\nmake them more prone to digging \u2013 Poodles do not like solitude, and can suffer\nfrom separation anxiety.<\/strong> This could come in to play if you leave your dog\nalone in your backyard. Did he just spend his\nfirst glorious day at the beach? I\u2019ve seen many dogs at the beach, and they all\nseem to either be swimming in the ocean or digging massive holes in the sand. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I don\u2019t know what it is about the sand and saltwater, but <strong>if your dog is just digging because of the excitement and fun of a camping trip or beach day, I think it&#8217;s  just fine to let him have his fun for the day. Just make sure he doesn\u2019t continue the behavior when you get home<\/strong>! And, if he does dig a hole at the beach, please make sure to fill it in before you leave for the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-if-your-poodle-is-digging-just-because-he-likes-to-dig\">What if Your Poodle is Digging Just Because He Likes to Dig?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>So, you hired an exterminator, and you don\u2019t have rodents.\nWhen it\u2019s above 80 degrees outside, your dog has shade, plenty of water, and\naccess to air conditioning. You walk your dog for 10 miles a day. Your Poodle\nis still digging. Now what?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>It is possible that\nyour dog just likes to dig. <\/strong>I know you didn\u2019t want to hear that, but there\nis still hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>First\noff, don\u2019t give your dog the chance. <\/strong>No more unsupervised yard play until\nyou get him trained not to dig. At the first sign of your dog thinking about\ndigging, stop him, and take him inside.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>If\nnothing else works, there are some products you can put down on the ground to\ndeter him from digging. <\/strong>We\u2019ll discuss those below. They are designed to\nsmell and taste bad, which will make your dog not want to dig, but they are\nharmless and will not injure your dog.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>He might\noutgrow it. <\/strong>If your Poodle is still a puppy, and not yet even 2 or 3 years\nold, this could all just be growing pains. Remember that the whole world is new\nand exciting for your puppy, and he might just get bored one day with digging\nand never do it again.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>He might\njust be a dog. <\/strong>There are some dogs that will just dig. It\u2019s in their nature\njust as much as eating food or breathing air. Some dogs are more into digging\nthan others. Terriers and other dogs who have instincts to flush out vermin and\nchase rats, for example, are known to like to dig. Since you have a Poodle,\nyour Poodle might not have this natural instinct to dig, so you might still be\nable to treat your dog not to dig.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t give up hope! <\/strong>There will be a way to get your Poodle to stop digging. If none of the suggestions work, give some of these products below a chance to work for you and your Poodle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"products-that-can-help-stop-your-poodle-from-digging\">Products That Can Help Stop Your Poodle From Digging<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a few great resources on Amazon that can help with digging.  If you\u2019re looking for something to help deter your pet from digging holes in your yard, there are a few great options available:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Zone-Repellent-Digging-Prevention-Naturally\/dp\/B07R6PQ5LQ\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?keywords=stop+dog+digging&amp;qid=1579311014&amp;sr=8-2&amp;linkCode=sl1&amp;tag=providdiapr0c-20&amp;linkId=8a891b9b76d0a87922d0a4ff4ce14ba0&amp;language=en_US\">No Holes! Digging Dog Prevention<\/a> \u2013 If you\u2019ve tried everything else, and none of the home remedies like cayenne pepper work, give this product a shot. It\u2019s harmless to pets and plants, but by spraying it, you are deterring your dog from digging holes. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Messina-Wildlife-Stopper-Repellant-Canister\/dp\/B00OP9Z5RU\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?keywords=dog+repellent+granules&amp;qid=1579723797&amp;sr=8-26&amp;linkCode=sl1&amp;tag=providdiapr0c-20&amp;linkId=61c4cb7691ba51b4c193ec1476632bb0&amp;language=en_US\">Messina Wildlife Dog &amp; Cat Stopper Pest Repellant Shaker Canister, 5 lb <\/a>\u2013 Spread these granules on the areas you are trying to keep your Poodle away from. If you have any other behavioral problems that you need addressed, there are some others like climbing and jumping that are covered in this book.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re not having any luck with some of the methods mentioned above, it might be time to try some products specifically designed to deter your dog from digging. Give one of these a shot, and maybe it will stop your Poodle from digging forever!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A great behavioral training course can really help when training your dog not to dig.
