Their popularity has seen the rise\nof an entirely new breed known as the Doodle, which leaves many\npeople confused about the differences between the two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What is the difference between a poodle and a doodle?<strong> Poodles have been recognized by the American Kennel Club as being its own distinct breed of dog. Doodles are off-spring of Poodles and other dog species, hybrids, which means Doodles are not their own independent breed. The differences between the two can vary from weight to allergies.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The differences don\u2019t stop there, and we\u2019ll go into further details in the article. You\u2019ll learn the history of the poodle and when the first Doodle was bred. Topics such as temperament and health risks will be brought up to help you learn everything there is to know about one of the smartest breeds.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"history-of-the-poodle\">History Of The Poodle<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Poodles are believed to have originated from Germany, where they developed for hunting waterfowl in <a href=\"https:\/\/poodlereport.com\/are-all-poodles-french-the-poodle-family-explained\/\">France<\/a>. The true origin of the Poodle is highly debated. Due to the proof that poodles were around during Ancient Greek and Egyptian artwork, many believe that the breed was a result of breeding European water dogs. These poodles were categorized according to their size, which was labeled as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Miniature<\/strong>\n\t<\/li><li><strong>Toy<\/strong>\n\t<\/li><li><strong>Standard<\/strong>\n<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Their name in German, <em>\u2018Pudel,\u2019<\/em>\nmeans \u201c<em>Splash of Water<\/em>.\u201d This references the Poodle&#8217;s\ninnate water-hunting characteristics. The poodle is ranked second out\nof most intelligent dog breeds, with the Border Collie being the\nfirst. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Standard Poodle is the largest size\nof the three and acted as a retriever for duck hunters and bird\nhunting that took place more upland. It has been used in the US and\nCanada since the early 1990s as fowl hunters. Their use in this\ndeclined many years later, where they began to grow popular for\ncircus performances and used as a status symbol amongst the wealthy. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their reintroduction to hunting sports\nis something that has begun to see another rise in popularity. It is\nreported that more and more Poodles are finding their ways out on the\nhunting fields after 30 years of breeding to refine the hunting\ngenome. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"poodle-lifespan\">Poodle LifeSpan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/poodlereport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Canva-Cute-Puppy-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-685\" srcset=\"https:\/\/poodlereport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Canva-Cute-Puppy-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/poodlereport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Canva-Cute-Puppy-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/poodlereport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Canva-Cute-Puppy-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/poodlereport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Canva-Cute-Puppy.jpg 924w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The lifespan of the Poodle is quite long, averaging at 12-15 years<\/strong>. Poodles are susceptible to many forms of eye disease that take the form of cataracts or <em>Progressive Retinal Atrophy<\/em>. In it, you&#8217;ll learn which cancers are most common in poodles and the symptoms that may suggest the onset of cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"additional-health-risks\">Additional Health Risks<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the many perks of owning a\npoodle is not having to worry about dander as often as you would with\nmany other breeds. This means that whenever they do start to shed\nmore than usual it could be caused by many underlying problems. Keep\nyour eye out of things such as ringworm and if your dog is\nexperiencing allergic reactions. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"do-toy-poodles-have-separation-anxiety\">Do Toy Poodles Have Separation\nAnxiety?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Toy Poodles require a lot of human\nattention, especially at a very young age. If you\u2019ve come home and\nseen your toy poodle has wrecked the place, it wasn\u2019t out of\ncontempt. The poodle was simply scared about being away from its pact\nand destroyed small objects around the room when they were no longer\nable to control it. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a very common issue amongst\nrescue dogs and won\u2019t show as often for dogs that have only known\none family their entire life. Toy Poodles can simply start to freak\nout when <a href=\"https:\/\/poodlereport.com\/can-poodles-be-left-alone\/\">left alone<\/a> if they\u2019ve been abandoned before out of fear of\nit happening again, or even if another pet that you had is no longer\naround. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thankfully the toy poodle is one of the\nmost trainable breeds alive. They are also very high energy making a\nsimple walk before you leave a very effective way to tire them out.\nLeave your dog alone for five-minute intervals at a time before\nslowly increasing the amount of time you are gone. This can help you\nget your poodle used to your absence, and since they know you\u2019ll be\nback, they won\u2019t destroy everything. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I recently wrote this <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/poodlereport.com\/15-easy-ways-to-help-stop-separation-anxiety-in-poodles\/\" target=\"_blank\">article<\/a> on how to stop separation anxiety in poodles. In it, you&#8217;ll learn how to identify this anxious behavior and fifteen ways to help fix it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are noticing that nothing is helping your poodle with separation anxiety, then it is a wise idea to branch off to other methods. You can use supplements such as <em>Ultra-Calm <\/em>that will relieve your dog&#8217;s anxiety for up to two hours. For longer amounts of time, there is always the option of using a pheromone plug-in that is used to help with anxiety stop stress-related behaviors such as chewing up pillows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your poodle is going through separation anxiety, then it is a bad idea to punish them for being destructive. It\u2019s irritating to have to replace and clean up your home, but taking corrective in the form of punishments can only worsen the symptoms. Poodles, specifically Toy Poodles, were bred for their loyalty and companionship.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A great behavioral training course can really help your poodle deal with <a href=\"https:\/\/poodlereport.com\/separation-anxiety-in-goldendoodles-and-how-to-stop-it\/\">separation anxiety<\/a>. I found a fantastic video training system called<strong>&nbsp;Brain Training for Dogs<\/strong>. With this training, I was able to discover my dog&#8217;s fears and use the training system to help eliminate the triggers that caused his anxiety. This is an awesome program and crazy inexpensive! Check it out&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/6c444lpaoigohit6-vvb-zx120.hop.clickbank.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> to see more detailed information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"poodle-temperament\">Poodle Temperament<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Poodles are beloved for their wholesome\nnature and necessity to spread it around. Their temperament is a\ndirect reflection of their I.Q. They act as loyal companions for\nchildren, although, like most dogs, it is recommended to never leave\nthem alone in the same room for an extended amount of time. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They love the water from their\nevolutionary history of hunting waterfowl, such as ducks. Because of\nthis, they make for proficient swimmers. Evolutionary features such\nas the fur on their ears help keep the water out of them \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Poodles are generally okay with apartment living, even though their intelligence will often lead them to boredom. The man responsible, Wally Conron was\na puppy-breeding manager for the Royal Guide Dog Association of\nAustralia. His goal was to breed an allergy-free service dog for a\nvisually impaired woman who suffered from allergies relating to dog\ndander. It took Wally two years and 33 attempts to successfully breed\na Standard Poodle and a Labrador.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although it wasn\u2019t an overnight hit, the breed started to see a rise in popularity in the following years. Unfortunately,  the popularity only helped enable the overbreeding that followed it. It wasn\u2019t very long before many puppy mills were breeding the dogs and marketing them as \u201chypo-allergenic\u201d to make cash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on the cross-breeding, the\nDoodle can have a variety of hairstyles, or even be born with\nmultiple at the same time. Because of this, Doodles often times are\nhigh maintenance in their appearance and may make you visit a groomer\nevery eight weeks.   \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"doodle-lifespan\">Doodle LifeSpan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The average lifespan of a Golden Doodle\nlies anywhere from 10-15 years which is great for a medium to large\nsize dog. Both the <a href=\"https:\/\/poodlereport.com\/poodle-vs-golden-retriever-which-breed-is-right-for-you\/\">Golden Retriever and Poodle are healthy breeds<\/a>,\nand it makes sense that many of the healthy genes between the two\nwould get coupled for the off-spring. This was thought to be standard\nwith the breeds very laid-back attitude, which helped it avoid many\nstress-related illnesses. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"health-risks\">Health Risks<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Golden Doodles are going to be prone to many hip-related diseases such as <a href=\"https:\/\/poodlereport.com\/hip-dysplasia-in-poodles-causes-prevention-and-treatment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hip dysplasia<\/a> and can even suffer from various eye disorders. If you notice anything seems off about your dog, then get them to the vet for consultation. Golden Doodles run the risk of having health problems from  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hip Dysplasia: <\/strong>This is a very apparent condition that is able to be seen in young puppies. This condition is when the joints do not develop properly and can cause future problems from <a href=\"https:\/\/poodlereport.com\/arthritis-in-poodles-symptoms-treatment-and-prevention\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">arthritis<\/a> to possible lameness<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Progressive Retinal Atrophy: <\/strong>If you notice that your Goldendoodle is bumping into things more often than usual, then it may be a symptom of this disease. This begins as night blindness slowly gets worse and can leave your pet blind completely.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Atopic\nDermatitis: <\/strong>Though we said that you won\u2019t see as many shedding\nissues with a Doodle as you would with any other breed, they still\nshare many of the same skin allergies. This condition will leave your\npet&#8217;s skin dry and inflamed, which may cause pain if anyone were to\ntouch them. The solution to this problem could be as simple as\nchanging their diet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While you can certainly get the best of both genes by <a href=\"https:\/\/poodlereport.com\/the-50-best-poodle-mixes-a-helpful-guide-with-pictures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mixing<\/a> up these two breeds, the same can be said about the health conditions. When breeding these two, you are essentially leaving the outcome to chance. Yes, you could see a very relaxed and smart family pet that will love you for many years to come, but you could also breed a Doodle that has many health problems impeding on its quality of life.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep in mind that there is also no such\nthing as a hypoallergenic dog. Allergens are going to be carried by\ndander and saliva. This means that there isn\u2019t a single breed of\ndog that is void of this condition. Everyone who is allergic acts\ndifferently around dogs and the same can be said about dogs who\nposses certain allergen levels. There is really no way of knowing how\nallergic to the dog you are going to be prior to meeting. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"doodle-temperament\">Doodle Temperament<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Doodles are known for their\ntemperaments, and like the Poodle, it is reflected by their\nintelligence. The breed that we have been referencing throughout the\narticle as an example known as the Golden Doodle is one that really\ngives truth to the claim. Both the Poodle and Golden Retrievers are\nknown for being fiercely loyal to their families. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Any breed of Doodle is going to want to\njoin in on family activities, and it makes great for a family pet.\nThey have a necessity to be where people are, and their energy levels\ncan go from non-existent to everywhere in a short amount of time.\nThey are known for being easy to train and one of the more obedient\nbreeds.   \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Doodles won\u2019t make excellent guard\ndogs. They will notify you of an intruder, but if your house were to\nbe broken into while you\u2019re away then your Doodle is more likely to\nask for belly rubs than it is to scare them away. Standard Poodles are for those that like a medium to\nlarge size dog while the Toy Poodle can be lugged around in your\npurse. Miniature Poodles are great for those that can\u2019t decide\nbetween the other two and give the best of both worlds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"there-s-a-style-to-match\">There\u2019s A Style To Match<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Poodles are known for having some funky\nand iconic looks about them. This goes double for the poodles we\u2019ve\nseen used as wealthy status symbols. The <a href=\"https:\/\/poodlereport.com\/25-haircuts-for-poodles-a-helpful-guide-with-pictures\/\">poodle hairstyle<\/a> in the\ncrossbreeds is something that rarely ever looks out of place. It\nmanages to utilize a sense of fashion that would look plain weird on\nother breeds and keep their shedding to an all-time low. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"they-rarely-shed\">They Rarely Shed<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a win-over for many. While they will shed from time to time, it\u2019s nowhere near the cleaning commitment that you would find with any other breed. It\u2019s best to train your puppy as soon as you get it to help it overcome problems like separation anxiety early and to help make crate training a breeze if their anxiety gets too them frequently.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"they-have-amazing-temperament\">They Have Amazing Temperament<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Poodles and doodles are rarely ever aggressive and are <a href=\"https:\/\/poodlereport.com\/the-12-calmest-poodle-mixes-with-pictures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">calm<\/a> the majority of the time. If you are able to socialize them properly, then they will not have a single problem dealing with other dogs. They make great companions for children, though it is wise to never leave the two alone for an extended amount of time. No matter their size, your poodle or doodle is going to believe they\u2019re a lap dog.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though having a calm dog can have\nits benefits, there may be situations where a breed that&#8217;s more\nauthoritarian could help. It is a very common practice to cross-breed\nmultigenerational dogs, which means that it could be a mix up of\nspecies. The breed is also known by many names including<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>North American Retriever\n\t<\/li><li>Golden Labradoodle\n<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The potential mixing of the breeds can cause a wild variation of temperaments.
